Biography

Community and advocacy has shaped Raymond Duncan’s life. He has lived in the Martin Drive neighborhood in Milwaukee’s 10th district since 2004. After moving to the neighborhood, Raymond became an active participant in the Martin Drive Neighborhood Association. His roles have included, website management, content creation, event planning, fundraising and budget management and mediating neighbor disputes. Raymond initiated the popular Martin Drive summer movie nights and brought back the holiday caroling tradition. An incredibly important aspect of Raymond's commitment to his community is connecting neighbors to city and county resources and helping them make their voice heard. He looks forward to continuing in public service as an alderman in Milwaukee’s 10th district.


Raymond was raised in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood. He attended Pius XI High School and earned a bachelor of science in education with a minor in history in 2004 from the University of WI-Milwaukee (UWM). Raymond was the first in his family to earn a college degree. In 2009, he earned a master of art in special education. Raymond has also completed post-graduate work at Syracuse University and UWM. While at UWM he was involved in student government, serving as the elected senate secretary and then president. His work involved budget management, segregated fee allocation, public outreach, coordinating a monthly column in the student newspaper and representing the voice of students on university committees. While there, he developed a deep interest in understanding and developing policy to enhance and serve the community.


He is certified to teach grades 1-8 and special education grades 6-12. He has taught in Milwaukee Public Schools since 2005, currently serving as a high school special education teacher for students with intellectual disabilities. Raymond currently teaches at Marshall High School. Go Eagles! He has been elected and served as a building representative for Milwaukee Teachers Education Association since 2010 and has served as department chair.
